Blue is a small word for a very large range of stones. The trade has developed a vocabulary that, while imperfect, is useful. Here is how izel uses it.

Cornflower

A medium, soft, slightly desaturated blue with airy presence. Lively under daylight; gentle under warm light. Often associated with classical Ceylon material.

Royal

A medium-deep blue with strong saturation. The face-up presence is rich and dignified. Royal is an aspirational term in the trade; we use it sparingly.

Midnight

Dark, deep blue tending toward inky. Midnight stones can be magnificent in the right cut and ring of light, but they can also extinguish under indoor warm light. We always present them under both.

A note on use

These terms are descriptive, not regulatory. Different sellers use them differently. We use them carefully and we will always show video under daylight and warm light, so the words have something to point at.
